Renesas Electronics Corporation has expanded its timing solutions portfolio with the introduction of the FemtoClock 3 family, which offers an ultra-low 25fs-rms clock solution for wireline infrastructure, data center, and industrial applications. The FemtoClock 3 devices, including clock generators and jitter attenuators with 8 and 12 outputs, enable high-performance and cost-effective clock tree designs for next-generation, high-speed interconnect systems. Target applications for these devices include telecom switches and routers, data center switches, medical imaging, and broadcast audio and video.

The FemtoClock 3 devices deliver industry-leading phase noise and jitter performance required for 112Gbps and next-generation 224Gbps SerDes designs using commonly available crystals in the 48MHz to 73MHz range. These highly integrated devices can generate up to four frequency domains and feature integrated LDOs (Low Drop Out regulators) with superior PSRR, reducing board complexity and cost.

According to Zaher Baidas, Vice President of the Timing Division for Renesas, the FemtoClock 3 devices provide multiple clock and synchronization functions in a single device with ultra-low jitter, simplifying PCB design and reducing solution area and cost. Vincent Ho, CEO at UfiSpace, praised the FemtoClock 3 for its ultra-low jitter performance, low power dissipation, and simplified PCB design, which were crucial for their next-generation switches.

Key features of the FemtoClock 3 family include industry-leading 25fs-rms jitter, support for 112Gbps and 224Gbps SerDes rates, multiple frequency domains, low power dissipation, integrated non-volatile memory for device customization, small package sizes, compliance with ITU-T G.8262 and G.8262.1 standards, and support for multiple operating modes.

Customers can combine the FemtoClock 3 solution with Renesas' ClockMatrix, VersaClock, buffer, and oscillator portfolio of timing solutions to address the timing requirements of high-performance wireline infrastructure and data center designs. The FemtoClock 3 devices are compatible with the Renesas IC Toolbox (RICBox) application, which allows users to configure and program the devices on the evaluation board. Additionally, RICBox interfaces with the Renesas Lab on the Cloud platform, enabling users to connect virtually to an actual laboratory setting.
